چکیده

We present the design and initial operation of a 96 kV, 40 A Magnetron Injection Gun (MIG) for a 1.5 MW, 110 GHz gyrotron. A critical parameter for the successful application of this electron gun is the uniformity of electron emission. The I-V curve of emission, at a series of temperatures, is measured. Analysis indicates that the work function of the emitter is 1.6 eV with a (total) spread of 0.07 +/0.01 eV. Measurement of the azimuthal emission uniformity with a rotating probe indicates that the work function variation around the azimuth, the global spread, is 0.04+/0.02 eV. The spread due to local (microscopic scale) work function variations is then calculated to be 0.06 +/0.02 eV. Temperature variation can be ruled out as the cause of the observed emission nonuniformity.

A Fully-Sealed Carbon-Nanotube Cold-Cathode Terahertz Gyrotron

Gigahertz to terahertz radiation sources based on cold-cathode vacuum electron technology are pursued, because its unique characteristics of instant switch-on and power saving are important to military and space applications. Gigahertz gyrotron was reported using carbon nanotube (CNT) cold-cathode. It is reported here in first time that a fully-sealed CNT cold-cathode 0.22 THz-gyrotron is reali...

Experimental study of a 1.5-MW, 110-GHz gyrotron oscillator

A detailed experimental study is presented of a 1 MW, 170 GHz gyrotron oscillator whose design is consistent with the ECH requirements of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) for bulk heating and current drive. This work is the first to demonstrate that megawatt power level at 170 GHz can be achieved in a gyrotron with high efficiency for plasma heating applications. Maxi...

Gyrotron for ITER

Recent megawatt gyrotron experiments at MIT have achieved record powers at 170 GHz. Single mode emission with a peak output power of 1.5 MW and an efficiency of 35% has been measured. The experiment is based on a resonant TE28 ,8 ,1 cylindrical cavity situated in a 6.7 T magnetic field. Microwaves are generated in the cavity by an 83 kV annular electron beam produced by a triode-type magnetron ...

Uniformity for a Magnetron Injection Gun

We report measurements of the azimuthal emission nonuniformity of a gyrotron's thermionic cathode as determined from two experiments, one which determines the total emission and one which scans the emitted beam using a rotating probe. In the total emission experiment, which measured the total collector current over a range of voltages, the cathode's total work function spread was found to be 0....

High-repetition-rate ferroelectric-cathode gyrotron

The intensive research on ferroelectric electron-emission mechanisms in the last decade has resulted in a wide understanding of the physics and characteristics of this plasma-assisted electron source. Nevertheless, practical devices employing this cathode were hardly introduced. In this experimental study, a high-repetition-rate microwave oscillator based on a ferroelectric electron gun has bee...
